Privacy Policies for Media, Photo, Video, Streaming

In support of the church’s commitment to Embrace and Share Christ’s love, we actively utilize our media technologies and outside media to reach members, prospective members and visitors with information about our church activities and programs. Those technologies include streaming media (live and prerecorded), a dynamic content-rich website, email (newsletters and other information), select social media platforms and distribution of information to outside news media. The technologies are complemented with materials via traditional mail services.

We populate these technologies with photos, video (live and pre-recorded), additional images and text as needed. Streaming media will include the live and recorded dissemination of worship services and other services/events as requested (funerals, weddings, musical performances, etc.).

We view these technologies as important tools in our obligation to share Christ’s love. However, we also take seriously the safety and privacy of those in our church. To ensure the safety and privacy of our members, member families (including children and youth), and visitors (i.e. church family) who may be portrayed in our media technologies, we will abide by the following guidelines:

·         We will assume approval of the use of images from photos or video (but not names) of our church family on our media technologies, or sent to outside news media in telling our story. They can opt out by signing a non-consent form for use of these images and/or notifying a church staff member. The forms are available on our website and in the church office.

·         We will never use the name of children or youth in our church family on our media technologies unless such identification is relevant and necessary and only if we have received consent to use names from the parent or guardian of the child or youth portrayed. We will assume a youth as someone younger than 18. If a child or youth’s name is used, we will only use the first name unless the full name is absolutely necessary, but in both cases, we will obtain consent. For adults in our church family, we will use first names only with their images but will obtain consent if the full name is absolutely necessary. Outside news media typically require full-name identification of people in photos so any such distribution of photos or video will require consent for identification.

·         To show involvement of children and youth in our church, we will strive to capture images of them from non-identifiable angles whenever possible to protect their identity. We will strive to avoid using close-up, recognizable images of children and youth on our media technologies but sometimes capturing the happiness shown on a face tells a powerful story in our faith community. If such closeups are deemed effective, we will obtain consent from parents or guardians for such use.

·         We encourage the submission of photos and video from our church family portraying their activities for use on our media technologies, including worship livestreaming. We will assume consent for use of these images is implied from the parent or guardian submitting the images and will adhere to same identification guidelines specified above.

·         We will use images of our youth provided by third parties as appropriate to highlight their achievements on our media technologies and only with parental consent. Example: a photo of a youth working on an Eagle Scout project published by a news outlet. Note: The media outlet would not need such consent but we will do so in keeping with our focus on safety.

·         We will keep our congregation informed about these privacy guidelines. They will be available on our website, and messages about consent of image use will be available on a regular basis through church signage, periodic notices in the church newsletter, and worship service bulletin.
